Its unique composition closely mimics the skin's natural sebum, making it an excellent moisturiser suitable for all skin types. Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, it can soothe irritation and reduce redness. Jojoba oil contains notable levels of ceramides, crucial for maintaining the skin's barrier function, but contains no actual peptides. Furthermore, while Jojoba oil does not contain AHAs or BHAs, it boasts a significant amount of essential fatty acids like Gadoleic acid (GLA's) as well as linoleic acid (around 0.5%) which can contribute to skin health and improved barrier function. The level of linolenic acid is about 0.05%.
Non-nano Zinc Oxide (Comedogenic Rating ) - stands out as a superior sunscreen active due to its larger particle size, minimising absorption into the skin and mitigating potential health concerns. Its broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection is gentle enough for sensitive skin, offering a less irritating alternative to chemical sunscreens.
Cica/Centella Asiatica/Gotu Kola (Comedogenic Rating 0) - Often lauded in skincare but popular in K-Beauty, offers a wealth of benefits due to its rich bioactive compounds. Notably, it boasts potent wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties attributed to its triterpenoid saponins like asiaticoside and madecassoside, which stimulate collagen synthesis. While not a direct source of peptides or ceramides, Centella Asiatica aids in boosting the skin's natural production of these vital components for skin barrier repair and hydration. It is generally considered non-comedogenic, with a low comedogenic rating, making it suitable for most skin types.
Cucumber Oil (Comedogenic Rating 1) - derived from the seeds of the cucumber fruit, offers a wealth of benefits for skin health. Its light texture and non-comedogenic rating of 1 make it suitable for various skin types, even those prone to breakouts. Rich in linoleic acid (around 60-70%) and linolenic acid (approximately 10-15%), essential fatty acids contribute to strengthening the skin barrier and reducing inflammation. While containing only a small amount of naturally occurring ceramides, cucumber oil boasts phytosterols that help support skin's natural ceramide production.
Watermelon Seed Oil (Comedogenic Rating 0-1) - A rising star in skincare, offers a wealth of benefits due to its unique composition. This lightweight oil boasts a low comedogenic rating (around 0-1), making it suitable for most skin types, including acne-prone skin. Rich in essential fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid (around 50-70%) and oleic acid (around 15-25%), it helps to balance the skin's natural oil production and strengthen the skin barrier. While it doesn't contain peptides or ceramides directly, its linoleic acid content can indirectly support ceramide production within the skin.
Organic Thistle (Safflower) Oil (Comedogenic Rating 0) - Extracted from the Carthamus tinctorius plant, offers a wealth of skin benefits thanks to its rich composition. Boasting a high linoleic acid content (typically 70-80%), a crucial omega-6 fatty acid, this oil helps reinforce the skin's natural barrier and reduce transepidermal water loss. Its low comedogenic rating of 0 makes it suitable for acne-prone skin, unlike oils with higher ratings that are more likely to clog pores, thus avoiding BHAs and AHAs. Safflower oil naturally contains ceramides to help moisturise the skin. It is also packed with peptides. Peptides and ceramides help to promote hydration and suppleness.
Turmeric Oil (Comedogenic Rating 2) - offers a wealth of skincare benefits thanks to its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, primarily attributed to its high concentration of curcuminoids. It boasts a low comedogenic rating, making it suitable for various skin types, though patch testing is always recommended. While not a significant source of peptides or ceramides itself, its ability to enhance skin barrier function complements their effects. Turmeric oil contains a modest amount of essential fatty acids.
Sweet Almond Oil (Comedogenic Rating 2) is a powerhouse of benefits for the skin and hair. Its emollient properties stem from a high linoleic acid content (around 20-30%), contributing to a low comedogenic rating of 2, making it suitable for most skin types. While it doesn't contain peptides or ceramides directly, it's rich in oleic acid (55-86%) and vitamin E, which support the skin's natural ceramide production and offer antioxidant protection. It also provides GLAs (Gamma Linolenic Acids) that help in reducing inflammation.
Candelilla Cera Wax (Comedogenic Rating 0) - Derived from the leaves of the Candelilla plant, offers an impressive array of benefits in the realm of skincare, particularly when it comes to enhancing barrier function and providing emollience. This natural wax contains notable concentrations of ceramides, which help to maintain skin hydration and integrity, while its peptide profile assists in stimulating collagen production, contributing to improved skin elasticity and firmness. Additionally, its low comedogenic rating ensures that it is suitable for a variety of skin types, even those prone to breakouts. Candelilla Cera is also rich in fatty acids, notably linoleic and linolenic acids, which are critical in maintaining the skin’s oil balance and enhancing lipid barrier functionality.
Helianthus Annuus (Comedogenic Rating 0-2) commonly known as sunflower seed oil, is a powerhouse in skincare formulations, offering a multitude of benefits that enhance skin health and appearance. This oil is rich in linoleic acid (approximately 65-70%) and oleic acid (approximately 20-30%), making it an excellent emollient that helps to maintain skin barrier integrity while reducing transepidermal water loss. The presence of ceramides and various peptides in sunflower seed oil contributes to its ability to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. Additionally, Helianthus annuus contains bioactive compounds that work synergistically with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) to promote gentle exfoliation and cellular turnover, enhancing overall skin texture and radiance. Furthermore, its high levels of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) are known to soothe irritation and inflammation, making it a valuable ingredient in formulations aimed at sensitive skin types.
Myrtle Oil (Comedogenic Rating 0) - Derived from the leaves and berries of the myrtle plant, offers a host of benefits for skin health, primarily due to its rich composition of bioactive compounds. This essential oil is known to contain various peptides and ceramides that enhance skin barrier function, promoting hydration and resilience. Myrtle oil exhibits a low comedogenic rating, making it suitable for a range of skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin. It features a balance of fatty acids, notably linoleic and linolenic acids, which are crucial for maintaining an optimal lipid barrier and reducing transepidermal water loss. Additionally, its natural exfoliating properties, akin to AHAs and BHAs, help in improving skin texture by facilitating cellular turnover. The presence of GLAs (gamma-linolenic acids) further supports its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, making myrtle oil a potent ingredient for promoting overall skin health and vitality.
Potassium Sorbate (Comedogenic Rating 2) - A versatile compound widely revered in the skincare industry for its impressive preservative properties and skin benefits. As a potent antimicrobial agent, it effectively inhibits the growth of mould and bacteria, thus enhancing product longevity without compromising skin integrity. In formulations, it works synergistically with other active ingredients, such as BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) and AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids), to promote exfoliation and improve skin texture. Additionally, potassium sorbate can bolster the efficacy of peptides and ceramides, supporting skin barrier function and hydration. With a low comedogenic rating, it is suitable for various skin types, including acne-prone skin, while its compatibility with essential fatty acids like linoleic and linolenic acids ensures optimal moisture retention and nourishment. Overall, potassium sorbate serves as a multifunctional ally in dermatological formulations, enhancing both stability and skin health.
Vitamin C (Comedogenic Rating 0) - A powerful antioxidant, offers numerous benefits for skin health, including enhancing collagen synthesis and promoting a brighter complexion. It works synergistically with peptides and ceramides to boost skin hydration and elasticity. While Vitamin C itself is not typically quantified in terms of peptides or ceramides, its formulation often includes these skin-replenishing ingredients for greater effectiveness. Incorporating BHAs and AHAs into your skincare routine alongside Vitamin C can help exfoliate dead skin cells, reveal a smoother texture, and minimise the appearance of pores. With a low comedogenic rating, Vitamin C serums are suitable for various skin types, particularly when combined with essential fatty acids like linoleic and linolenic acids, which can support the skin barrier and reduce inflammation.
Lavender (Comedogenic Rating 0-1) - Renowned for its soothing fragrance and therapeutic properties, also boasts a range of skin benefits that make it a treasured ingredient in skincare formulations. Containing notable compounds like peptides and ceramides, lavender aids in enhancing skin barrier function and promoting hydration, which is essential for maintaining plump and youthful skin. Its low-comedogenic rating, often around 0-1, signifies that it is unlikely to clog pores, making it suitable for various skin types. Additionally, lavender's balance of AHAs and BHAs supports gentle exfoliation and cell turnover, refining skin texture and improving overall clarity. The presence of linoleic acid, which typically ranges between 30-40%, helps regulate sebum production, while its linolenic acid content assists in reducing inflammation. Collectively, these properties position lavender as a multifaceted ingredient that harmonises well with other actives, effectively providing a calming yet revitalising experience for the skin.
